Carson Ledbetter Miss Roth English 1-2 pd. 6 23 February 2017 Nightmares Becoming Reality Have you ever woken up at night after a nightmare thinking at it actually happened? This is primarily what sleep paralysis is. People who have experienced sleep paralysis have said that it s a terrifying event to go through. Very few people actually experience this and the majority of the people that do have some kind of health issue that is related with sleeping. Sleep paralysis is when a person is awake and fully aware of their surroundings but theirs brain and body are still asleep so they cannot move or steak and are completely paralyzed. Also, during sleep paralysis people start hallucinating and they can see unknown entities in the corner†¦show more content†¦People with anxiety usually have mental illness and it is caused by stress from the environment and by the brain changing. To be more specific, when the circuits in the brain that are responsible for fear and other emotions have trouble developing, it triggers anxiety. â€Å"Studies ha ve shown that anxiety disorders can run in families† (â€Å"Anxiety Panic Disorders Health Center† 2). This means that anxiety has a chance of being genetic. If parents or grandparents had or have anxiety, there is now a greater chance of being diagnosed with it also. Anxiety is another indication to why people experience sleep paralysis. Narcolepsy is another cause of sleep paralysis. People with narcolepsy experience sleep paralysis because with narcolepsy, the body is half awake while also being half asleep which causes hallucinations. â€Å"This is a disorder that is characterized primarily by persistent and excessive daytime sleepiness, which which is usually the first symptom to appear† (Utley 3). Since sleep paralysis is caused by lack of sleep, it could man that it is because of narcolepsy. The hallucinations people experience during sleep paralysis could also be stemming from narcolepsy as that too is known to cause hallucinations as well. â€Å"Narcol epsy can potentially be devastating in its effects on self-esteem, relationships, education, employment, health insurance, social life, activities, and quality of life in general† (Utley 4).
